A Contract with God

I really really enjoyed this graphic novel. At first I thought it was going to be all religious and g rated in a way, but boy was I wrong. It actually caught me off guard when the pornographic situations started to arise, but I kept interest in it throughout the whole thing. This whole story, or series of stories, are entertained in quite the opposite of religion. Religion does play a part but the cheating, pornography, lies, and deceit just take hold of the whole story.

The text in the precursor of the entire novel its well written and placed on the paper. It instantly grabs your attention. The first full image depicted creates so much mood for the entire story line. Torrents of rain pouring onto the ground as an old man walks with a seemingly dejected aura around him. At this point I would like to say I absolutely loved the ink work in this comic. It gives it mood, tone, and a stylistic quality that just makes everything flow so smoothly from page to page.

The part about the singer was a little off putting but funny at the same time. Not a huge fan when he starts beating his wife and then apologizes, that was a little much. Though I did really like how he goes around and starts singing in the alley ways and then gets picked up by this voluptuous woman and taken home by her. When he leaves and goes and gets drunk he can no longer find her apartment. That I thought was humorous.

The super was one that was really jaw dropping and kind of uncomfortable. The way that old guy seduces the young girl and all that was just really creepy. Only to find out that she was seducing him the whole time to get his money and run with it. The worst part was when she poisoned his dog. I honestly don't like anything that has to do with an animal getting hurt because of a stupid human. I thought that part was really sad. Though when the guy dies I thought he almost deserved it, but then again I thought the girl should have gotten something as well for she seemed to start it all.

I really liked the layout and mood that was given to this novel. It seemed to solve itself with the illustrations and not be too heavy of a read due to the nice light text. I also enjoy the white space that was left in the pages, it made the comic not feel so heavy and cluttered. I liked very much how A Contract with God was not in the usual style of a graphic novel. It seemed better that way, and I could not picture how it would look in a more graphic novel layout.
